What are the connections between the genocide in Palestine, Ukraine, Taiwan, Africa and Latin Abya Yala (former Latin America)? Decolonial theorist Sandew Hira argues that we are at a pivotal moment in world history where humanity stands for a choice: barbarism or decolonization. The struggle for the liberation of Palestine, the war in Ukraine, the military build-up of US and Japan in the South China Sea, the leftish military coups in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, the elections in Venezuela, the presidential elections in the USA and the recent BRICS meeting in Kazan bring to the fore all the forces of a declining Western civilization versus a rising new decolonial world civilization.
In his lecture Sandew Hira, author of the book Decolonizing The Mind – A Guide to Decolonial Theory and Practice, goes into the history of Palestine and British colonialism and the history of the Palestinian liberation movement and the broader axis of resistance. He connects that with all the pieces of the puzzle of world history that enables us to understand where we are at this moment in world history and where we might go in the near future. He shows how the struggle for the liberation of Palestine and the ongoing genocide is a pivotal moment in the history of colonialism. Hira concludes with a comparison of the solidarity movement with Palestine in the global south and this movement in the global north. He deals the similarities and differences and how to link them to the challenge of decolonizing the global north and the global south.
